Navigating the Emotional Journey of Moving Home
Moving home is often painted as an exciting new chapter, fresh starts, new surroundings, and endless possibility. And while that is absolutely true, what is spoken about far less is everything that happens in between.
The waiting.
The uncertainty.
The anxiety that quietly sits in the background, whispering “what if it all goes wrong?”
Our recent move has reminded us just how real that emotional rollercoaster can be.
The In-Between Phase… When Doubt Creeps In
Before completion, everything feels fragile.
Even when things are progressing, there is always that underlying sense that it could unravel at any moment. You start to second guess decisions, question timelines, and brace yourself for problems that may never even happen.
We found ourselves living in a temporary rental, caught between two lives. On paper, it was just a stepping stone, but emotionally, it felt far heavier and more emotional.
It did not feel like home.
It did not feel settled.
And it certainly did not feel like peace.
That “in-between” space is one of the hardest parts of any move. You are no longer where you were, but not yet where you are meant to be.
Living with Anticipatory Anxiety
There is a particular kind of anxiety that comes with property transactions, not because something is wrong, but because so much is unknown.
You wait for emails.
You wait for updates.
You wait for confirmation.
And in that waiting, your mind fills in the gaps.
We recognised this as anticipatory anxiety, expecting problems before they happen. It is incredibly common, especially when so much is at stake both financially and emotionally.
What helped us was acknowledging it rather than fighting it.
Not every silence means bad news.
Not every delay is a disaster.
Not every thought is a reality.
When Plans Do Not Go as Expected
Our original move did not go ahead.
That in itself was a difficult moment, after investing time, energy and hope into something that ultimately was not meant to be.
But what we have come to realise is this:
Sometimes the plan falling apart is actually the plan working.
Because what came next was something we could not have predicted, a property that simply felt right in a way the previous one never quite did.
The Moment Everything Changes
Completion day is a strange mix of emotions.
Relief.
Excitement.
Exhaustion.
And then, very quietly, something shifts.
The tension lifts.
That constant background noise of “what if” disappears, and for the first time in months, you can breathe properly again.
Walking into what we now know is our forever home, there was a sense of calm that we had not felt for a long time.
Not perfect.
Not finished.
But right.
Finding Peace Again
This next chapter is not about perfection, it is about building something meaningful.
Yes, there is work to do.
Yes, there are projects ahead.
But there is also space, perspective, and a sense of belonging that cannot be rushed or forced.
And perhaps most importantly…. you find peace.
A Note to Anyone Going Through It
If you are currently in that uncertain stage of waiting, worrying, questioning everything remember you are not alone.
It is a normal part of the process, even if it does not feel like it at the time.
Try to remember:
• Not every fear will become reality
• Delays do not always mean failure
• The right property often feels right for a reason
• And sometimes, the path that looks like it is going wrong is actually leading you somewhere better
Moving to a rural or lifestyle property is not just a transaction, it is a life decision. And with that comes emotion, vulnerability, and a fair amount of unpredictability.
But when you finally arrive where you are meant to be, it makes every step worthwhile.
